Installation

The following instructions provide for a default installation of Ubuntu Server on modern UEFI-based computer hardware with a single internal storage device and a network interface with Internet connectivity. The instructions assume the installation media is either a USB storage device or optical disc.

Boot

  1. Boot the system from the Ubuntu Server installation media. The GRUB Boot Menu screen will be displayed.

  2. Select Install Ubuntu Server and press Enter.

Locale

  1. The Select a language screen will be displayed.

  1. Select your language from the list and press Enter. The Select your location screen will be displayed.

  2. Select your location from the list and press Enter. The Configure the keyboard: Detect keyboard layout? screen will be displayed.

  3. Select No to skip keyboard layout detection. The Configure the keyboard: Country of origin screen will be displayed.

  4. Select the country of origin for your keyboard and press Enter. The Configure the keyboard: Keyboard layout screen will be displayed.

  5. Select the keyboard layout and press Enter.
    Additional components will be loaded, which may take several minutes to complete.

Network

  1. After network components have been loaded, the Configure the network: Hostname screen will be displayed.

  1. Type the hostname for this system and press Enter.

Users

  1. The Set up users and passwords: Full name screen will be displayed.

  1. Type your Full name for the new user account and press Enter. The Set up users and passwords: Username screen will be displayed.

  4. Re-type your Password for the new user account and press Enter. The Set up users and passwords: Encrypt home directory screen will be displayed.

  5. Select No to disable home directory encryption.

Time

  1. After setting up the clock, the Configure the clock screen will be displayed.

  1. Select Yes if the detected time zone is correct, otherwise, select No to choose a different time zone.

Partitions

  1. The Partition disks: Partition method screen will be displayed.

  1. Select Guided – used entire disk and set up LVM and press Enter. The Partition disks: Select disk to partition screen will be displayed.

  2. Select the disk to be partitioned and press Enter. The Partition disks: Write the changes to disks and configure LVM? screen will be displayed.

  3. Select Yes. The Partition disks: Amount of volume group to use for guided partitioning screen will be displayed.

  6. Select Yes.

Packages

  1. After installing packages from the local media, the Configure the package manager screen will be displayed. If you need to use a HTTP Proxy to access the Internet, you can provide the information on this screen.

  1. Select Continue.

Updates

  1. The Configuring tasksel screen will be displayed.

  1. Select the required update policy.
    Update OptionDescription
    No automatic updatesRequires an administrator login and manually install updates.
    Install security updates automaticallyInstall unattended-upgrades package, which installs security updates without the intervention of an administrator.
    Manage the system with LandscapeLandscape is a paid service provided by Canonical to help manage Ubuntu machines.
    It is highly recommended that you install security updates automatically, unless this is to be a managed system.
  2. Press Enter.

Software

  1. The Software selection screen will be displayed.

    Virtual Machine hostPackages to run KVM virtual machines.
    OpenSSH serverPackages needed for an OpenSSH server.
  2. Select Continue.
    Each selected software collection will be downloaded and installed, which may take some time to complete.

Finished

  1. The Finish the installation screen will be displayed.

  1. Select Continue. The system will shutdown and restart.
