The following instructions explain how to install the Raspbian image on a storage device from Windows using additional third-party software.
The Raspberry Pi Foundation recommends the use of Win32 Disk Imager (GPLv2.0).
- Download and install the latest version of Win32 Disk Imager.
- Plug the storage device into your computer, either directly, or using an adapter if required.
- Open Win32 Disk Imager and select the downloaded Raspbian Image File.
Image File - Select the drive letter of the Target Device from the drop down list.
Target Device - Click Write. A message asking Are you sure you want to continue? will be displayed.
Are you sure you want to continue? - Click Yes. The Image Process will begin.
Image Progress - Once complete, a message stating Write Successful will be displayed.
Write Successful - Click OK. You may close the Win32 Disk Imager application.
- Remove the storage device from your computer and plug it back it to your Raspberry Pi.
- Power on your Raspberry Pi, and assuming has gone well, Raspbian will boot from your storage device!
Next, install the latest Raspbian Updates.
